With our eyes on the future, it is important to remember the leaders, who got us here.
Thank you to Laurie, Mark, Alyson, and Iain!
Laurie Shimizu, Mark Lawrence, Alyson Purdy, and Iain McIntyre started from scratch and with their tireless efforts over two decades created far more than just our team—they helped build the very foundation of robotics in Minnesota. Through their dedication, vision, and countless hours of mentorship, they shaped a program that empowered students to explore STEM, discover their potential, and believe that complex challenges can be solved through curiosity, collaboration, and perseverance.
They created a place where students learned to think like engineers, communicate like leaders, and work closely as a team. In workshops, classrooms, and competitions, students have gained not only technical knowledge in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, but also the life skills that carry far beyond robotics—problem-solving, resilience, creativity, leadership, and the confidence to tackle the unknown.
Their impact reaches well beyond our own team. By helping establish and grow robotics programs across Minnesota, they inspired generations of students to pursue STEM pathways and to see themselves as innovators, builders, and changemakers. Their influence has shaped the broader FIRST community and contributed to the strength of the national organization, leaving a legacy that continues to open doors for students everywhere.
Because of their commitment, students have discovered passions, built lifelong friendships, and found the courage to chase ambitious goals. The culture of mentorship, curiosity, and excellence they cultivated continues to guide us today.
We are deeply grateful for the path they forged and the opportunities they created for all of us. The foundation they built allows us to stand here today—not just as 1816 “The Green Machine,” but as a STEM community of learners, leaders, and problem-solvers ready to carry their legacy forward. Thank you!
